Level4 Bust - A Revolutionary Way to Improve Oral Operational Proficiency in Aeronautics

INSTRUCTIONS

HOW TO PLAY?

CHALLENGE CARDS ARE KEPT OUT OF SIGHT AT ALL TIME !

A CHALLENGE arises when 2 teams arrive on the space that justifies an airprox.

DECIDE how you want to play the CHALLENGE before the start of the game. There are 2 possibilities:

  1. Teams CHALLENGE each other and then select the topic. (this is the most challenging and fun as the topic can be easy or difficult. The draw depends on the selectors luck.)
  2. Teams decide on the CHALLENGE after the topic has been selected (probably more suited to the weaker groups)

Instructions on Challenge Cards
No aircraft can ever be at the same level at the same time so these teams CHALLENGE each other to the number of possible correct responses they will identify out of 20 written on the CHALLENGE CARD. When the challenge is set the CHALLENGE CARD is randomly selected from the cover. The team has ONE MINUTE to play the challenge.  The team reader takes the CHALLENGE card and reads out the title of the CHALLENGE, the team answers as quickly as possible, with the team reader offering help with clues and prompts to help maximise their score. When time is up the score must equal the predicted score to win the moves. IF the team fails to meet the CHALLENGE then the difference in predicted score and the actual score is rewarded to the other competing team. (E.g. Team predicted 10 correct responses but achieves 8 only actual responses then 2 points are awarded to the opposing team.)

BONUS CARDS

They are placed on the gameboard during play.

When you land on a BONUS square you take the top card follow the instructions and replace it at the bottom.

All BONUS CARDS carry an advantage.

NOW START PLAY: Each team will select a colour identifier and position HOLD.

ROUND 1/ EXPLANATION (Time allowed 1 minute)

First decide teams, remember as play circulates every team member has the opportunity to be a reader.

Now each person will randomly select without looking 5 to 10 cards from the 530+ vocabulary words depending on the number of teams playing e.g. 5 teams of 2 = 10 persons, so each person selects 5 cards only (50 words). This can increase or decrease depending on the level, time and group’s decision. Teams decide how to start, play continues to the right.

  1. These selected cards are now given to the first reader, the cards are shuffled and the game is ready to start. The back of the card is only visible to the reader.

  2. The timer is set. The reader turns the first card over, studies the word and explains the word to his team to get them to guess what word is written on the card. When the correct word is said the reader now moves on to the next card and play continues until time is up.

Let’s follow an example here. The word on the card reads TAXI
The reader now says something like "a pilot requests this when he wants to go to the runway" ( pause for response)
If no response the reader continues with "after push-back what does a pilot request"  (wait for response)
The team says "TAXI" the reader quickly takes his next card and continues.

  3. There is NO PASSING in this round. The reader must keep explaining and helping his team to find the correct word or phrase.

  4. The correct cards are now held by the team. Scoring for each team takes place according to the number of correct responses.

  5. The remaining cards are now handed to the next reader on the right. The new reader continues to play the same sequence of play with his/her team as before. If a reader has started and the team runs out of time then the next team has the advantage and opportunity to respond immediately.

  6. Round 1 is finished when all the cards have been read and answered correctly.

ROUND 2 / ONE WORD ONLY (Time allowed 1 minute)

The next reader now reshuffles the cards and round 2 begins.

  1. The reader looks at the card and says only ONE WORD to associate the word/phrase to the explanation. This is usually associated to a previous explanation in round 1.

  2. The reader can PASS on this round in order to maximise points for the team, so if the reader or team hesitate about a word or gives a wrong response then pass to next word. The PASSED words are put at the bottom of the cards not showing the team.

  3. Play continues for 1 minute only. The cards are reshuffled before being given to the next reader in the round.

  4. At the end of each team’s turn the correct cards are again converted into points on the game-board.

  5. The cards are again reshuffled before the start of round 3.

ROUND 3 / AERONAUTIC PHRASEOLOGY or MESSAGE (Time allowed 1 minute)

  1. The reader now says a phrase or air-related sentence that you could possibly hear in your operational or work environment REPLACING each written word with "BLEEP" (1 word = 1 bleep, 2 words = 2 bleeps etc.)
  2. The team member must readback a correct message replacing the ‘BLEEP’ with the proper meaning of the word in context.
  3. There is no passing in this round, the reader repeats or changes the phrase or message until the team confirms the correct readback.
  4. When each turn is completed the correct answers are converted to points on the board-game.
  5. The winning team is the one to have the most moves on the gameboard for these complete 3 rounds.
(scoring after each turn allows teams to define a strategy for playing and maximising their moves)

CONTINUE PLAY

You are now ready to restart the whole sequence of play again e.g. select new cards, play rounds 1, 2, and 3 etc. to see which team arrives at the “WELCOME/DESTINATION” first.

POINTS TO REMEMBER & TEACHER’S/INSTRUCTOR’S NOTES

"taking aeronautics seriously"

Students should enjoy language learning. LEVEL4BUST takes serious fun into the classroom.

The goal of LEVEL4BUST is to develop aeronautical English language skills so students and trainees can engage in successful communication. Teachers and instructors train students to be accurate and confident. LEVEL4BUST introduces a serious word activity which keeps the language content linked to the immediate training environment. Students are communicating but also practicing micro skills like vocabulary and pronunciation and macro skills of structuring and fluency. Students respond very positively to word activities when the teacher explains the rationale and objectives of the game.

  • Rules and disciplines of the game can be waned or levied as you like depending on the level and experience of the group.
  • If the reader has given lots of explanations and his team cannot guess the correct word by the time their time runs out then this card passes to the next reader and this team can say or guess the correct word immediately.
  • Encourage teams to listen to every clue and explanation as carefully as possible; this will help immensely in the following rounds.
  • The instructor/teacher or the group themselves can decide if such phraseology, messages and readbacks are correctly related to aeronautics, the frequency or operational/work environment.
  • Vocabulary explanation, corrections regarding pronunciation and/or phraseology can be corrected by instructor/teacher as and when necessary. (use SERIAL NUMBER to download SELVOC word explanation)
  • Vocabulary and responses to play the full 3 rounds are aimed for LEVEL 4 in the ICAO rated speech score.
  • It is important to remind the players to think around the work environment as they tend to focus and get “boxed-in” on frequency and routine live traffic.

ALTERNATIVE AND MORE SERIOUS GAMES TO ADAPT AND PLAY

"learning tomorrow’s vocabulary today"

THEMES: by selecting vocabulary related to:

  • WEATHER
  • MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
  • TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
  • DIVERSE SITUATIONS
  • GROUND / APPROACH / EN ROUTE
  • PHRASAL-VERBS, ABBREVIATIONS, WORD ASSOCIATIONS

VOCABULARY ONLY: for non-level 4s
Play round 1 to revise, improve, explain vocabulary and meanings and work on interaction and teambuilding skills.

QUIZ:
The teacher plays the part of the quiz master and explains the words. The student who replies correctly moves one space on the board OR play to the one minute rule where the moves depend on the number of correct answers in the allocated time.

STORYTELLING:
Select cards and give to each student/trainee. Tell the student to create a story or incident using the vocabulary provided and report back to the group.

WORD and PHRASEOLOGY EXTENSION:
Select words and ask the student to compile as many expressions/phrases as possible connected or associated to the word.

FLASH CARDS:
For pronunciation and explanation.

BACK TO BACK:
The players sit with their backs to each other to really improve and develop their communication and interaction skills.

YOUNG LEARNER’S SPELLING ACTIVITY: (not only for the adults)
Select the more general words for these really younger learners and get them to spell the word. Every correct letter in the word equals moves on the board. A great ways to remember words, spell correctly, improve pronunciation, increase vocabulary, study geography and have a laugh.
